The Controller General of Prisons Ja'afaru Ahmed has urged the participants of the on going workshop on the "effective implementation of non - custodial Measures in Nigeria " to approach the workshop with open minds.
He said this during his special address in the opening session of the two days workshop organised by the Prisoner's Rehabilitation and Welfare Action ( PRAWA ), European Union, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA).
The workshop is to focus on fast tracking the implementation of the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the treatment of prisoners (The Mandela Rules ) and the United Nations Rules for the treatment of Women offenders (The Bangkok Rules ).
The two days workshop will also sensitize senior Prisons Officers on the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015. This act , according to the prison boss, provides for the use of non custodial measures in dealing with offenders. It targets reducing prisoners' population particularly those facing minor charges. The workshop therefore is expected to strengthen the capacity of participants towards the implementation of these measures.
