Sir Sunny Ade... HBD. I think I'll just use this opportunity to eulogise one of my role models of all time.
I grew up with the melodious symphony and sonorous voice of this musical sage wafting through the whole house in the 70's. Yeah my mom was an avowed fan and sang his songs word by word and even using his proverbs to tease or taunt as the case may be. She had all the albums of the icon from the 60's till she died in 1993 (I can remember it was Sokoyokoto and My dear Then).
My elder brothers were subtle bullies as they'll change his words to obscenities and had a line for anyone who wasn't in their good books. I watched silently and listened harder but what I picked was a spirit mind in a mortal cask, these words were not mere jingles but melody, hewed from the cords of immortals and the beats, hewed from the cacophonous orchestra of God's philharmonia.
Fortunately my first meeting with the Demi god was with my mom in the early 80's on the steps of the then Ogun State Hotel and as he exchanged greetings, I noticed he was shy... Shy!? _ Unknown to me was an attribute of the gods to disarm. Strategist.
Well I know sir you have kept Nigeria happy for a very long time and your music has liberated a lot of bondage stricken Nigerians. Even when hopes were dim, you kept faith and sang to Nigeria... Won't forget your 'Peano' advert that it's jingle became instant melody in most homes in the southwest of Nigeria.
For you to have attained this lofty height and advanced age and still be on top means that God himself loves you like the biblical David! I listened to your interview some days ago and I quote you... "my best is yet to come... "! How convenient for a grandmaster to keep his audience on a standing ovation? (At 70 years!)
On behalf of my family, my people and multitudes of Nigerians you have kept standing and clapping, or dancing and gyrating, we use this opportunity once again to wish you a resounding longer life and prosperity. Hip hip hip... Hooray!!! God bless you and give you good health in the land of the living_Amen.
